Day 233 – Orange Cupcakes with Orange Buttercream

It’s time for another spring (or maybe summer)-style cupcake.  Yummy and citrusy.  Light and fruity.  You ready?  Orange Cupcakes with Orange Buttercream (recipe below from Mama’s Gotta Bake).

Orange-Cupcake     Mini-Orange-Cupcake

The cupcakes are dense and a little muffin-like. They are orange. Like, orange to the extreme! Wow!! So refreshing. Not overly sweet. But very, very orange.


The frosting is soft and creamy. It has nice flecks of orange zest that make it very pretty. It tastes a little like an Orange Julius. Or a creamsicle. Orange and cream. Very yummy.

Together it’s orange, it’s sweet, it’s creamy. It’s yummy and refreshing. Like an orange scone or orange cake topped with a creamsicle. Seriously tasty.

Orange Cupcakes with Orange Buttercream (recipe from Mama’s Gotta Bake)

Orange Cupcakes:

  • 1 stick unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs, separated
  • grated zest of 2 oranges
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice

Orange Buttercream:

  • 3/4 cup butter, softened
  • 2 teaspoons grated orange zest
  • 1 pound powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons fresh orange juice
