Ready to Roll

27 Jul

It’s time to get myself (and my apartment) prepared to begin My Year of Cupcakes.  Obviously, I need to start with the essentials.

My mixer!

Never bake without it!  (Unless a recipe calls for hand mixing…which is possible.)

Next, all the accessories.

Baking is all about the science.  The measuring is VERY important – cups and spoons are a must-have!  You also need 1 or 2 good spatulas.  I am also fortunate enough to have an ice cream scoop and a mini scoop (aka cookie scoop) — they make getting the cupcakes into the pan crazy easy!

And, last but certainly not least, let’s not forget the muffin pans and cups!

Other than that, I’ve been stocking up on ingredients.  I have 50 pounds of flour, 25 pounds of granulated sugar, 16 pounds of unsalted butter, 7 pounds of brown sugar, 7 1/2 dozen eggs and 1.5 pounds of Dutch-processed cocoa powder (I’m oh so thankful for that Costco membership!!).  Not that these are the only ones I’ll need for My Year of Cupcakes, but it should get me started!

Alright, check back in 4 days for Day #1 of My Year of Cupcakes!!

Making the grade

17 Jul

Each of our competitors (aka cupcakes) needs to make the grade.  So, here’s the criteria I’ll be using!  Each category will be graded with 1 being the lowest (yuck!) and 5 being the highest (yum!).  The totals will be tallied leaving one cupcake the obvious weekly winner.

The Categories are…

– Cupcake Taste – how does the plain ole cupcake taste without any additions?

– Frosting Taste – how’s the topping when it’s all alone?

– Overall Taste – does the cupcake get along with the frosting?

– Appearance – are they adorable, blah or something else all together?

– Ease of Making – how hard did I have to work to get through the recipe?

And, don’t worry, I’ll also elaborate on each category so that we’re all on the same page!

The search begins soon!!

The search begins…

My quest to find a year’s worth of cupcake recipes is ON!  I’m scouring the pins of Pinterest for every possible cupcake recipe.  Visit my Pinterest page to see how things are going.  If you have a good recipe for me, leave me a comment.  I’ll let you know if your cupcake is chosen to compete!

I’ll begin baking on August 1st!
